“Quan thanh tra” được xuất bản lần đầu năm 1836. Vở kịch được N.V.Gogol dựa theo một số gợi ý của Pushkin: Một anh công chức nhỏ lang thang đến một thị trấn miền Nam rồi bị tưởng nhầm là quan thanh tra từ thủ đô Peterburg đi thị sát.
Vốn là những kẻ tham nhũng, bọn quan chức ở đây lo sợ, tìm cách mua chuộc, hối lộ cho quan lớn.Nhân dịp đó chúng tố cáo lẫn nhau, nói xấu nhau để tâng công. Tệ hơn nữa, viên thị trưởng còn định lợi dụng cả vợ và con gái hòng leo cao hơn lên bậc thang danh vọng, chiếm một địa vị to hơn, vững hơn để áp bức, bóc lột dân chúng được nhiều hơn.
Câu chuyện tuy xảy ra ở một vùng hẻo lánh, song với thiên tài khái quát tuyệt diệu của Gogol, “Quan thanh tra” đã vạch trần bộ máy quan chức cồng kềnh, mục nát của chế độ Sa hoàng, chúng hầu như gồm những phường trộm cướp trắng trợn không làm được việc gì có ích.

“The Inspector” was first published in 1836. The play was based by N.V.Gogol on some suggestions by Pushkin: A small official wanders into a southern town and is mistaken for an inspector from the capital Petersburg on an inspection tour.
Being corrupt, the officials here are afraid and try to bribe and pay off the big officials. They take advantage of that opportunity to denounce each other and speak ill of each other to flatter themselves. Worse still, the mayor also intends to take advantage of his wife and daughter in order to climb higher up the ladder of fame, occupy a larger and more stable position to oppress and exploit the people.
Although the story takes place in a remote area, with Gogol's wonderful generalization, “The Inspector” has exposed the cumbersome and rotten bureaucracy of the Tsarist regime, which is mostly composed of blatant thieves who do nothing useful.
So, when one day the "peaceful" town suddenly turns upside down, what tricks will the local officials play when facing the danger of being exposed? How real will the cowardice and meanness be? How much money and temptation will be enough to soften the heart of the powerful inspector?
